Maxar’s WeatherDesk team is looking for an Atmospheric Scientist! This position requires someone who has the passion, organization, and vision to lead applied research and development activities that enable Maxar to deliver leading solutions that address the evolving challenges related to changing weather and climate. The position can be done remotely.

WeatherDesk scientists work on problems of diverse scope across climate and meteorological timescales, where in-depth analysis of data and techniques requires in-depth knowledge and the best scientific approaches. You will collaborate daily with a team of weather data experts to support products and services that meet and exceed diverse customer requirements.

Day by day with your colleagues:

  • Contribute to the improvement of our scientific approach to global renewable energy forecasting, including wind and solar power, onshore and offshore. Continuous innovation is expected to keep our solution highly competitive.
  • Lead the refinement and development of new techniques for our approach to basic weather forecasting. Efforts are likely to include the application of data assimilation techniques, data aggregation, and applicable AI/ML approaches, as warranted.
  • Advise leaders on evaluating and enabling the “art of the possible” related to weather forecasting solutions.
  • Support engagements with foreign weather agencies and modeling centers, to advise our clients and internal stakeholders on the best approaches to solving NWP-related issues.
  • Maintain a deep network of peers (academic and professional organizations) to keep Maxar abreast of novel approaches to solving weather and climate problems. Quarterly readings back to the team.

Minimum requirements:

  • US citizen or permanent resident.
  • Doctorate in Atmospheric Sciences or Applied Mathematics (with professional experience in Atmospheric Sciences).
  • 8 or more years of experience (a master’s degree can count on 2 years of experience).
  • Advanced knowledge of the Python programming language.
  • Experience with atmospheric data formats such as GRIB and NetCDF.
  • Familiarity with creating quantitative and graphical analysis using tools such as GrADS and various Python data science libraries.
  • Demonstrated understanding of AI/ML techniques, preferably using Python, in relation to weather and climate applications.
  • Experience developing in a cloud-based Linux environment.
  • Experience with version control software (Git).

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Amazon Web Services (EC2, S3, EBS, RDS, Lambda) and interacting with those resources using Python.
  • Experience in creating and transforming raster datasets.
  • Familiarity with the use of relational databases such as MySQL and/or PostgreSQL.
  • Knowledge of renewable energy forecasting and related scientific approaches.
  • Understanding of numerical weather observation and prediction data assimilation techniques and their uses in various applications.
  • Exposure to a variety of programming languages ​​such as Perl, C/C++, Fortran, and shell scripts.
  • Experience conducting research and development within the constraints of product timelines in the private sector.
  • Experience working with clients and strategic partners to understand their needs.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • He maintains a deep network of peers (academic and professional) to keep Maxar abreast of novel approaches to solving weather and climate problems.
