We are looking for a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher working on a project at the interface of deep learning and Earth surface modelling:

AI, Biodiversity and Climate Change

As part of an interdisciplinary team with expertise in artificial intelligence (McGill University, Polytechnique Montréal), biodiversity, carbon cycle science, and surface-atmosphere interactions (University of Montréal), the postdoc will explore, develop, and implement proxies for deep learning for several process-based formulations in the Canadian Land Surface Scheme, including Biogeochemical Cycles (CLASSIC), that require improvements (eg, vegetation phenology). Funded through the Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO), the two-year position is based primarily in Montreal, Québec, with regular research visits to Victoria, British Columbia. Montreal is home to several research-intensive universities and research groups, including a vibrant AI community centered around Mila – Quebec AI Institute. Together, these world-renowned institutions provide ample opportunities for professional development and collaboration. A competitive salary for this position is based on the candidate’s experience. The ideal candidates for this entire postdoctoral position have

1) a strong quantitative background obtained through a Ph.D. (for postdoc) in computer science, mathematics, ecology, software engineering, ecology, Earth system science, etc.,

2) in at least some aspects of the project (e.g. deep learning, earth surface modelling),

3) the ability to work independently and effectively as part of a team made up of university and government researchers, and

4) excellent oral and written communication skills in English, and

5) a history of timely completion of projects and publications.
